PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The client, an asphalt plant, is located in an industrial zone adjacent to a developing residential area of condominiums and townhouses within the confines of the city of Alexandria VA. The site has been in continuous use as an asphalt plant for many years. The recent pressure to provide more housing in a rapidly growing area has resulted in residential development alongside long established industrial industries. As might be expected, this overlap has caused some conflicts.

In an effort to minimize some of the more visual manifestations of the asphalt plant, the owner has undertaken cosmetic work and an extensive program to capture and clear the "Blue Smoke" that is a byproduct of petroleum based asphalt paving material production.

A structure was needed to surround the plants to contain the blue smoke released as the asphalt trucks were being loaded. A system of collectors, ductwork and filters would achieve the removal. The exhaust system filter unit is the size of a tractor trailer and the exhaust fan is 57,600 CFM.

Criteria for the job:
- Plant operation could not be interupted.
- Dump trucks would be passing through the lanes randomly to meet the supply   demands of the various pavement projects.
- The building had to be attractive and compatible with other onsite improvements.
- Manufacture and delivery had to be quick and erection had to be flexible to production   constraints.
- The silos are mounted on a very heavy structural frame. The existing columns have   load cells attached and each lane has a large drive-on scale. Nothing could be attached   to this frame that would significantly impact the performance of these devices.

The Corle Building Systems District Manager, technical staff and designers worked with us to design a building that enclosed the existing plant, incorporated the existing scale house and provided a building design that fulfilled the client's requirements. The building was erected within two weeks of Corle's delivery of the steel to the site.

Corle's Pennsylvania neighbor, JLG, manufactures some of the most adaptive man lifts available, and their products allowed us to work around all the various traffic and plant supply systems while allowing the plant to continue full production throughout building erection.
